WLP uses Human Rights Alerts to focus urgent attention on the arrests of women’s human rights defenders and rally timely support for landmark campaigns on women’s rights.

In particular, we highlight challenges faced by our partner organizations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, many of whom are subject to surveillance, harassment, arrest, and organizational closure because of their work to advance women’s rights.

On November 27, 2012, the Inter-District Court of Bishkek dismissed a complaint brought to the court by Tolekan Ismailova, Director of WLP Kyrgyzstan/Human Rights Center-“Citizens Against Corruption” and the human rights Bir Duyno Film Festival.

Change for Equality: In a letter addressed to judicial authorities and the head of the prosecutor’s office at Evin prison, the detained lawyer, political prisoner, and human rights activists, Nasrin Sotoudeh, announced that in protest to the inhumane and unacceptable treatment of her children, husband and sister during their last visitation, including a five-hour detention, she has decided to refrain from any such visitations in order to protect her children from any further harm.

Reza Khandan, Nasrin Sotoodeh's husband, has been detained at Evin prison, after appearing at the prosecutor’s office in response to a summons he received last week. Khandan was summoned to court following the sentencing of his wife, imprisoned lawyer and activist Nasrin Sotoodeh, to 11 years in prison and a 20 year ban from practicing law and travel outside the country.
